More Than Just Skiing: The Best Things to Do on Mt Buller
When people think of Mt Buller, they picture skis, snowboards and fresh powder — and rightly so. But there’s a whole other side to the mountain that often gets overlooked. Whether you’re travelling with non-skiers, taking a rest day, dealing with a few too many closed runs while we wait on Mother Nature to do her thing, or just want to mix things up, here’s everything else Mt Buller has to offer beyond the slopes.
1. Buller Air Zone — Bounce, Climb and Fly
Looking for some high-energy fun off the snow? Buller Air Zone is an indoor trampoline, airbag and climbing facility that’s perfect for kids, teens and adults alike. With multiple high-performance trampolines, airbag activations and a climbing wall, it’s a fantastic way to burn off energy, build confidence, or simply have a blast with the family — no snow skills (or snow cover, for that matter) required. It’s also a firm favourite for birthday parties and group bookings.
2.Step Back in Time at the National Alpine Museum of Australia
For a slower-paced and fascinating afternoon, the National Alpine Museum of Australia is well worth a visit. Tucked into the village, the museum tells the story of Mt Buller’s rich alpine history — from the early pioneers who first skied these slopes over a century ago, to the evolution of the resort into the destination it is today. It’s a great option for a cosy, low-key activity, especially while we’re all keeping an eye on the snow forecast.
3.Unwind at Breathtaker Spa Retreat
If your legs need a break (or you’d simply rather not test them on the limited terrain currently open), book yourself in for a treatment at Breathtaker Spa Retreat. With alpine views, a heated outdoor pool, sauna, steam room and a full menu of massages and treatments, it’s the perfect way to relax, recharge and feel like you’re still making the most of the mountain — even if you haven’t clipped into a pair of skis all day.
4.Catch a Movie at the Cinema
Sometimes the best apres-ski plan is simply putting your feet up. Mt Buller’s on-mountain cinema is the perfect spot to unwind after a big day on the slopes — or, let’s be honest, an equally great option when there isn’t quite enough snow cover to justify lift tickets just yet. With comfy seating and a great selection of films, it’s an easy win for families with younger kids or anyone wanting a relaxed night in (without actually staying in).
5.Explore the Sculpture Trail
Take a wander around the village’s Sculpture Trail, where you’ll find quirky alpine artworks dotted throughout — including the much-loved statues of Hans Grimus and Kaptan. It’s a lovely, easy activity to do between other adventures, and makes for some great photo opportunities.
6.Sled Dog Experiences
For something truly unique, keep an eye out for sled dog experiences on the mountain. Watching (or even joining) a dog sled team glide across the snow is a magical experience for kids and adults alike — and not something you’ll find at many other Australian destinations.
7.Soak Up the Alpine Aurora
As the sun goes down, don’t miss the Alpine Aurora light display in the village — a beautiful, atmospheric way to end the day and a favourite with visitors of all ages.
8.Kids Week — Fun for the Whole Family
27 JUNE – 10 JULY
Keep an eye out for Mt Buller’s upcoming Kids Week, packed with family-friendly entertainment, activities and surprises designed to make the whole family’s stay even more memorable. Catch Magical Mountains performing live at Alpine Retreat on Monday 29 June and in the Village Square at 4:30pm on Wednesday 1 July. It’s the perfect time to bring the kids and experience everything the mountain has to offer beyond the slopes.
9.Grab a Bite and Soak in the Village Vibe
With over 30 venues across the resort, there’s no shortage of places to relax between activities — from a hot chocolate and a slice of cake to a full pub meal by the fire. Strolling through the village, taking in the mountain air and soaking up the atmosphere is, honestly, one of the best parts of a Mt Buller stay.
10.Hike to the Summit
If the legs are itching for a workout but the lifts aren’t quite calling your name, lace up your boots and hike to the Summit instead. The walk rewards you with sweeping views across the High Country (clouds permitting!) and a genuine sense of achievement — plus a great way to warm up when the chairlifts feel a little too breezy for comfort.
11.Stay On the Mountain, Make the Most of It All
Booking your stay in Mt Buller accommodation right in the village means all of these activities are just a short stroll from your door. Whether it’s a rest day from skiing, a non-skiing member of the family looking for things to do, a forced day off while we wait for the snow gods to deliver, or you simply want to make the most of everything the mountain has to offer, an AMS Mt Buller apartment puts you in the perfect spot to enjoy it all.
