One of the most asked questions our team gets is: “When is the best time to visit Mt Buller for the most snow?”
It’s a great question — and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what kind of snow experience you’re after. The mountain looks, feels, and skis differently in June than it does in August than it does in September. And the truth is, every part of the season has something going for it. So rather than give you a one-line answer, we’ve broken it down month by month — so you can choose the trip that suits you best.
June — Opening Weekend & the Magic of First Snow
There is nothing quite like opening weekend at Mt Buller. The 2026 season officially kicks off on Saturday, 6 June — the King’s Birthday long weekend — and if you’ve never experienced it, it belongs on your list.
The village comes alive after months of quiet. Ski hire shops throw their doors open. Restaurants fill up. The lifts start spinning. There’s an electric anticipation in the air that you simply can’t manufacture — it has to be felt. Fireworks light up the village on opening night, and the mountain buzzes with the particular joy of people who have been waiting for this moment since October.
It’s a brilliant event for families. Beginner ski and snowboard lessons fill the gentle runs on Bourke Street, toboggan parks are open in the village, and the chairlift rides — even just up and back for the views — are something children remember for years. The atmosphere is festive, generous, and entirely unique to the start of a new snow season.
In terms of snow conditions, June is early days. Snowmaking has been running since May building the base, and natural snow begins settling on the mountain as temperatures drop. You won’t always get wall-to-wall coverage in June, but you’ll get the energy of a mountain waking up — and that counts for a lot.
Best for: Families, first-timers, those who want atmosphere and events as much as skiing.
July — The Season Hits Its Stride
July is when Mt Buller starts to feel like the mountain you dreamed about. Temperatures are at their coldest, snowfalls are consistent, and the runs are opening up across the mountain. This is peak season in full swing — and it delivers.
The school holidays bring families up the mountain in force, which means the village is buzzing, the restaurants are full, and there’s an infectious energy on the slopes. If you’re skiing with kids who are learning, July is a wonderful time — the ski school programs are in full swing, the terrain parks are shaping up, and there’s no shortage of other young skiers to share the excitement with.
Midweek in July is a sweet spot for those who want the peak-season snow without the weekend crowds. The runs are quieter, lift lines are shorter, and you’ll find it easier to get lessons booked and restaurant tables without a wait. If your schedule allows it, Tuesday to Thursday in July is genuinely hard to beat.
Best for: Families during school holidays, keen skiers wanting great conditions, midweek escapes.
August — The Snowiest Month on the Mountain
If you want the deepest snow, the most reliable powder days, and the mountain at its most spectacular, plan your trip around August.
Historically, the first week of August is the snowiest of the entire season — averaging around 22 centimetres of fresh snowfall across roughly three and a half snowy days in a single week. This is when the serious skiers and snowboarders come to play. The upper mountain terrain is fully open, the advanced runs are at their best, and on a bluebird powder day — the kind where the sun comes out after a big overnight dump and the whole mountain glitters — there is nowhere on earth quite like it.
Late August into early September also marks the point when snow depths across the mountain tend to be at their deepest, with the base built up over months of natural snowfall and consistent snowmaking. For those chasing the ultimate snow experience, this is your window.
A word of planning advice: August is the busiest time on the mountain, and accommodation goes quickly. Book well ahead — particularly for weekends and the mid-August school holidays — and consider locking in midweek stays for the best combination of conditions and value.
Best for: Experienced skiers and snowboarders, powder hunters, those who want the best possible snow conditions.
September — Spring Skiing & the Best Kept Secret of the Season
Here’s something a lot of people don’t know: September can be one of the most enjoyable times of the entire season on Mt Buller — and it’s often significantly cheaper.
The crowds thin out after the August school holidays, and something shifts on the mountain. The queues disappear. The runs feel like they belong to you. Parking is easier, the roads less hectic, and the whole experience has a more relaxed, unhurried pace that’s genuinely lovely.
Spring skiing has its own magic. The mornings are still crisp and cold, the snow firm and fast underfoot. By early afternoon, the sun does its work and the surface softens, making for more forgiving conditions — perfect for beginners or those coming back to skiing after a long break. Falling in soft spring snow is a very different experience to taking a tumble on a frozen groomer in July, and the mountain’s gentler spring terrain is a great place to find your legs.
Lift ticket prices typically move into off-peak rates in September, and accommodation follows suit — you’ll often find strong deals that simply don’t exist during the July–August peak. It’s also worth checking for Kids Stay Free offers and other late-season packages, which can make a family trip significantly more affordable.
The season runs through to early October, and in a good snow year, the mountain can stay remarkably well-covered right to the end. Some of the most memorable days on snow happen in late September — warm sun, soft snow, almost no one else around, and a glass of something cold at the end of it all.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, beginners, families looking for a relaxed first snow experience, anyone who values space over status.
So — When Is the Best Time?
Here’s our honest take, after many seasons on this mountain:
There is no single best time. There’s the best time for you.
If you want energy and atmosphere, come for opening weekend in June. If you want peak snow conditions with your family, book July school holidays early. If you want the deepest, most reliable snow and the mountain firing on all cylinders, August is your month. And if you want great skiing, lower prices, and the runs to yourself, September is one of the best-kept secrets in the Victorian High Country.
Whatever time you choose, this mountain will reward you. That we can promise.
