The Spirit of the High Country
Hut-to-hut hiking is more than just a walk in the mountains — it’s a journey through history. Many of the huts scattered across the Alpine National Park were originally built by cattlemen, gold miners, and later by skiers and bushwalkers seeking refuge from the elements. Today, they serve as both shelter and storytelling spaces, each with its own character and sense of place.
Imagine finishing a long day on the trail, boots caked in dust, and finding a timber hut nestled among the snow gums. Inside, the air is cool and quiet, the walls lined with stories from decades of adventurers before you. Whether it’s the famous Bluff Spur Hut, Craig’s Hut (made famous by The Man from Snowy River – a great excuse to re-watch an absolutely classic Aussie film), or the secluded Ritchie’s Hut by the Howqua River — each stop feels like stepping back in time.
Choosing Your Route
The High Country offers a range of hut-to-hut trails, from shorter overnighters to multi-day epics. The Victorian Alps Walking Track is a classic — stretching across rugged peaks and high plains, with routes linking iconic huts like Federation, Cleve Cole, and Roper’s. Closer to Mt Buller, the Bluff to Mt Stirling circuit is a popular choice, offering incredible views, rewarding climbs, and several huts along the way.
or those wanting a taste of adventure without committing to a week-long expedition, a two- or three-day loop around Mt Stirling and Mt Buller provides the perfect balance — alpine scenery, historic huts, and great access.
When to Go
Summer and early autumn (December to April) are prime times for hut-to-hut hiking. The trails are clear of snow, the wildflowers are in bloom, and the weather is ideal for long days on the track. In winter, some huts are still accessible — often by snowshoe or cross-country skis — but it’s best suited to experienced adventurers with proper gear.
A Side Note: Comfort Before or After the Trail
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay before or after your hut-to-hut hike, AMS Mt Buller offers fantastic options. Situated right in the heart of the action, they have a range of comfortable, modern accommodation that’s perfect for recharging — whether you’re drying out your gear, soaking sore legs, or simply enjoying a hot shower and a glass of wine after days in the wilderness.
The Reward – And maybe a new Challenge!
What makes hut-to-hut hiking in the High Country truly unforgettable is the mix of raw nature and timeless human touch. It’s about the connection between people and place — between old wooden beams, alpine breezes, and the quiet hum of a camp stove. And if you get a taste for it, there is always the added challenge of competing in the Oscars Hut to Hut Challenge – stay tuned for more detailed information on this in our next post!
So lace up your boots, pack smart, and set out on one of Victoria’s great adventures. The huts are waiting, the trails are calling — and the mountains will do the rest.
