Why the High Country at Easter?
While the rest of the world might be celebrating Easter with spring flowers and new blooms, here in the Southern Hemisphere, we’re stepping into the heart of autumn. And honestly? It’s perfect. Mt Buller and the surrounding high country comes alive in shades of gold, amber, and crimson. The days are mild, the nights crisp, and the pace… gloriously slow.
It’s the kind of place where time stretches a little longer, meals feel a little cozier, and every view looks like it belongs on a postcard.
Autumn Walks + Easter Egg Hunts = The Dream Combo
Easter in the High Country is all about getting outdoors—and there’s no shortage of incredible trails to explore. Whether you’re keen on an easy stroll under golden trees or a heart-pumping hike to the top of Mt Stirling, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Some of my personal favourites:
- Delatite River Trail – a beautiful intermediate track, great for spotting colourful leaves along the Delatite River.
- Summit Nature Walk – filled with granite boulders, wildflowers (yes, still a few), and epic views.
- Family Trail – a gentle alpine walk perfect for everyone.
And for the little ones? Join us in the Village on Sunday at 11am to watch Woz and the Animals of the Magical Mountain show! Then the main event – the famous RT Edgar Easter Egg Hunt. With 10,000 eggs (yes, you read that right!) hiding on Mt Buller on Sunday don’t be late for this hunt! Starting at 11:30am bring your eagle eyes and taste for chocolate!
Fireside Feasts and Local Flavours
Easter is also prime time for slow-cooked meals, baked treats, and local wine—because let’s be honest, one of the best parts of any getaway is the food. Mansfield and surrounds is full of farmers markets (see below!), wineries, and artisan producers. You’ll find everything from rich reds to crisp prosecco, perfect with a roast lamb or veg-laden stew. Pair that with some local cheese from Milawa Cheese Company or Little Cedar, fresh bread from the famous Mansfield Bakery and maybe a warm fruit crumble from The Kitchen Door—and you’ve got yourself an Easter feast worth writing home about. Or head to local institution The Produce Store for all of the above under one roof!
Where to Stay: Cabins, Cottages & Alpine Hideaways
One of the joys of Easter in the mountains is the accommodation, and that’s where we come in! Nothing beats coming back from a hike to a crackling fire and a hot cup of tea (or wine, your call), and with 10% off all accommodation there really is no excuse!
- Looking for a romantic escape? Elkhorn 2, Alto Villa 303 or Reindeer 9 are our top picks
- Travelling with family or friends? Rent a bigger place like Koinonia, Moose 10 or K2-04 – plenty of space for everyone!
Local Events and Easter Vibes
All through Easter weekend, you’ll find local markets like The Outdoor Provedore and Mansfield Bush Market. Woods Point Easter Festival is a must see, and for the art lovers…the Mansfield Easter Art Show is calling. You can also find church services, winery events, and even the Big Bunny Book Bash.
A Few Quick Tips

Final Thoughts
Easter in the Australian High Country isn’t loud or flashy. It’s gentle. It’s beautiful. It’s the kind of getaway that fills your lungs with fresh air and your heart with calm. Whether you’re hiking a new trail, sharing a homemade meal, or just sitting on a porch with a hot drink watching the leaves fall—it’s a holiday that sticks with you.
So if you’re thinking about heading to the mountains this Easter, do it. Bring your beanie, your walking shoes, and your love for good food and quiet mornings and book something memorable with AMS Mt Buller.
